Farmall A Steering Problems

I have a 1944 Farmall A and when I turn the steering wheel the tractor turns but I must immediately correct by several turns on the steering wheel in the opposite direction, which causes me to again correct back the other way. The steering is not difficult, it is just not responding to what the steering wheel does. I want to mow between my planted pines, but it looks like it's going to be real job just to get the tractor to follow a straight line without a lot of back and forth steering. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
