John, you can check your firing in the following way.When number one cylinder is at top dead center the distributor should fire as it begins to move down...you can determine top dead center when you rock the engine back and forth and valves for number 4 cylinder both seem to have moved at almost the same time( one closes, and the piston goes down, exhaust opens), rocking the engine back and forth you will see this, looking into the spark plug hole you can determine that #1 is TDC on its power stroke, the rotor should be in a position to light up the #1 wire...your crank pulley should have makings on it as well to help you find TDC#1. You should get ignition. Check the points and distributor cap , if they have been sitting they could be moist or corroded. When My old M won't go I pull the rotor ,scratch the surface with a screw driver and put it back on...and it starts. Good luck with your m , keep us posted...Mike in Exeter Ontario
