Experience - If you tear enough M farmall engines down you get to know what the different pistons look like. Same with heads. I bought a 400 Farmall and with simply taking one spark plug out I could tell it had IH Fire Crater Pistons in it and it had the 450 or 281 ci head on it. I came out good on that tractor. Of course none of this helps you. You will need to get a M&W piston and look at it and then take a look down your spark plug hole. You may want to buy a fiber optic viewer if your not sure what to look for. Or buy a head gasket and pull the head. Two people can have a head off in 20-30 minutes 40-60 if your slow. You oculd also have someone with some experience look down in there also. A viewer will also let you see ring groove and condition of the valves.
