Larry - That's a roblem often encountered with "single wire" alternators. Some versions have a regulator that draws significant current even when shut down - enough to drain the battery after a few days of being idle. That's why I'm not a big fan of single wire units. Pulling the ground cable off the battery after shutting down for the day is probably your cheapest workaround. Note however the problem could also be a bad diode as Lou suggests...
