The harder bolts, SAE grade 5 or 8 will definitely last longer than a softer bolt. I'm not familiar with the configuration here, but most likely, you bolts failed due to excessive stress, not shear. If the bolts worked loose, that will cause quicker failure. Make sure the bolts are tighten to the specified torque for the size and grade of bolt. A bolt will fail much quicker if loose.
