Some of the old Farmalls came with a small gasoline tank and a larger "distillate" tank. The tractor was started on gasoline and then switched over to the "distillate" (a crude fuel, similar to, or the same as kerosene, depending on the locale). It was cheaper to burn, but harder to start the engine with. At the end of the day, before you shut off the tractor, you'd switch the fuel valve back to gasoline to fill the carb bowl with gasoline for easier starting.
