After being poured, castings were allowed to age for a period of time before they were machined and installed on tractors. The serial number indicates that the M was made relatively early in the 1948 production run; given the October 1947 casting date you supplied, it would make sense that it would have been used in 1948. Castings were not immediately machined after being poured/cooled. P.S. Getting the CA would be a good thing. CAs are nice tractors! Very handy, and a well-made tractor.
