farmall (a) fan shimming ?

I have recently rebuilt the engine on my (a) the biggest problem I had was getting the crankshaft pulley back on, it is a bout a half inch from being fully seated, but the front seal is making good contact with the seal, since the pulley is not all the way in, the belt alignment is off on the fan belt, I shimmed the fan assy out about an eighth of in inch to get it in line, has any one else done this, will it work ? or should I continue to beat on the crank pulley and get it in all the way ?\
