The typical noise you hear is usually from the straight cut gears in the transmission. As they wear, the mess pattern changes over time allowing more noise with age and use.

While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery.
