ATF in the fuel tank is an old trucker/farmer trick to clean the injectors. Clean injectors, better spray in the chamber, less or no smoke. I don't use it all the time, but will put some in the tank before filling to get the mix blended. Seems to get the crud build up out of the combustion chambers, too. Anyway, I don't get the part about the no air filter. Do you have a canister or nothing there at all? The thing is, if the tractor was run without an air filter for an extended period of time, grit and dirt may have done in rings, valve guides, any number of oil sealing parts that will have you burning crankcase oil in the combustion chamber, causing smoke. Now if it just sat for a while without the filter on it, something may have made a nest in the intake manifold and got you clogged up. Anyway, does the tractor run ok other than the smoke? If so, this probably isn't much of a problem. Keep trying, let us know how it turns out.
