I think I would install a new sleeve and piston kit. Those are wet sleeves and they have a sealing ring (doughnut) at the bottom of the sleeves to prevent coolant leakage. You do not
want antifreeze to leak into the crankcase. The block needs to be thoroughly cleaned of all rust and dirt where these sealing rings are installed.
If the block is sludged up it should degreased
and all oil passages cleaned. The crankshaft and head should cleaned too. The crankshaft needs to be measured for wear and to determine if a polishing is needed or if it needs to be ground
undersize for undersize bearings. The head needs to be checked too. Worn guides, valve seat
condition and thickness of valves to name a few. That student will like working on that engine. Hal
