The engine was cleaned before we rebuilt it, but thats the reason I think it was an older problem. The engine and pan were quite clean when we tore it down and my friend didn't notice much of anything in the oil or filter when he changed the oil, and he is enough of a mechanic himself that I am sure he checked it. I might add there was no sign of scoring on the bearings, but they were oversized. Is there any chance you might be able to come up with the part number on those gears? It would save a lot of argument with the guy behind the parts counter.
