THe 4th 5th sliding gear is only a "gear for fourth. Fifth is a spline clutch on the shaft at the front that meshes with splines in the input shaft. Looking at the gear will not tell you anything, they look nice (unless fourth is trashed). The splines in the input shaft are usually worn to short nubs from hard grinding into fifth for hunderds of thousands of shifts. The fix includes at least an eighth in overlap of the shaft into the splines (you probably have .oo5" or less, just nubs of splines. Replacing both the input shaft/gear, and the 4-5 slider is probably needed. the roller bearings in the intermediate bearing (between the input shaft, and the top shaft will fall into the trans when comming apart. Put a cloth into position to catch them on disassembly. use heavy wheel bearing grease on the bearings to hold them in place when going together. Good luck, JimN
