I am not sure if its open it would be ok I guess. I broke mine off in the block and the machine shop drilled tapped and replaced it with a plug, so I took it out and put a larger pipe in I had to bend it just right so the crank would not hit but it seems to work. its a oil return. Unless it needs to be in oil for the pressure to be right I am not sure.Maybe someone else will chime in. JON
