I am trying to help someone out and explain to them that "I believe" that there is an internal transmission problem and not simply a simple shifter bushing problem as they believe it is. I think it is worn shift forks or possibly worse.
Here is the scenario: The tractor is harder then heck to get into any gear and will seemingly find its way into two gears at the same time because when you let the clutch out the engine just wants to bog down and stall. Sometimes there is some grinding of the gears while tring to engage a gear but the clutch does its job very well.
How much does it cost to go through a transmission on one of these tractors replacing all of the normal wear items and what are some of the common items to go wrong with these transmissions in these tractors? One of my neighbors said that this type of failure is very common in this model of IH tractor. He confirmed my diagnosis but I wanted further confirmation from you guys to help this friendly couple that I met the other day to help them out.
