I had the same symptom, but my problem was a bit different. The gearbox lash was fine. Tie rods were fine. What I found was that the center tie rod arm was loose on the vertial shaft. Appears to have been run over the years with the bolt loose. soooooo, I cleaned it all up, used 2 GM starter motor shims, trimmed to fit the square, new bolt, and it is fixed. I placed the shims on the front 2 flats of the arm, with a short lip on the top to hold in place. These shims were .020 each. I only had to drop the axel, and not the whole gear box (which is a good thing).
No more slop in the steering except for the "normal" lash.
If you are lucky, your problem may be the same.
Took me 2 hours from start to finish to repair including the trip to NAPA to get the GM starter shims............
