MDs can have a few issues with starting on gas.
Off the top of my head...
1: The carb gets gunked up and the jets plugged. Modern gas icks them up quick. I had to pull the carb on a TD18 the other day that was sparkly clean last fall. Main jet completely coated with something that resembled paint.
2: The intake manifold does not snap over to the gas side. Most don't know it but the butterfly shaft is not pushed into place. It is merely pushed past center and a snap over spring pulls it the rest of the way. Obviously it has to snap closed, and may not go completely shut.
3: The mag snap coupler quits.
4: Over choked and flooded. Very very easy to do on an MD.
