As a kid growing up in NE Iowa, we used to take Hwy. 52 from Dubuque to Prairie du Chien along the Mississippi river every fall, and cross over at Marquette to PdC for some cheese and smoked salmon. I don't remember the magazine, but they listed it as one of the 5 prettiest drives in the US. This is just across the river from where you guys are writing about and it is (or was ) really colorful. Last time I was there in the fall, it had been really dry and a lot of the color was not there... mostly a lot of brown.
Most people, including myself, do not take the time any more to enjoy things like that. Last time I did that as a kid, I rode with my girlfriend at the time and her parents, and was more interested in her than the scenery  . Turns out my time would have been better spent looking at the trees and old Farmalls.
