I recently bought a 1951 Farmall Cub to sickle mow with. Not a bad tractor...
But, like many of these tractors, it is missing the front grill. I checked a few places and most want $80 for a front grill, which from what I have read, is a bit "ill-fitting." Not that it is necessarily bad, but, I don't like the idea of having to do a whole bunch of working, after paying someone $80.
So, instead, I spent $11.83 (plus 2 sausage McMuffins-$2.14) and got a roll of 1/4" mesh hardware cloth big enough to do 4 Cub grills, and tapped into my supply of 18 gauge sheet metal and made this:
It took me a few hours, but I saved $70. True, it doesn't have the original "woven" pattern to the wire. The wire is, instead, welded and zinc plated. I did find a supplier for the correct woven wire in 18 gauge with 1/4" holes. The wire was $12 plus shipping, but I didn't want to wait on the mail when it's a nice sunny morning. Plus, I am not putting it in shows, and if I damage it, I have enough to make a second one, and already have the pattern made.
Outter shell is 18 gauge steel, crimped over the wire, mounting clips are 1/16" steel plate, cut down to size.
