The shaft should be dry between the final and tranny. No need for lube obviously, and there are weep holes on each end of the right side and one on the left to drain away anything that seeps past the seals on eether end. If there is oil making it past the seals, you might expect to find some work its way out onto the shaft.
I don't make enough gaskets to be able to quote you a thickness. I've always kind of eyeballed it. If you're talking about a material for under the caps, a paper gasket about twice the thickness of a fingerail(sorry, that's all that somes to mind quickly!) would be about right. Nothing so thick as a valve cover or pan gasket. More like the gasket betwen your carb and manifold, or one grade thinner.
I'll paw around the stuff I've got out in the garage tomorrow, and if I can find any of what I'm thinking of, and can find a thickness printed on it, I'll post back.
