Remote Hydraulics

In a couple of books I have,there is a M with the remote hydraulics.It also has two control rods,one for the liftall pump and the other for the remote.How is it plimped up so that both units work.We have always had to attach a string or something to keep the arm on the liftall back so that the remote would work.Or is it something at the other end of the control rod that pulls both back at the same time.(The two boooks im refering to are Guy Fays Originality Guide,page 93,100 andGreat American farm Tractors by Robert Pripps pages 232 and 233.)
