By removing the 6 bolts, you will not pull the whole top shaft out, just the constant mesh gear assembly. Im not 100% sure, but I don't think the top shaft will come through the front hole, youll have to reove the 3 bolts holding the rear of the shaft and bearing as well, could be wrong. My glasses are at work, but you did get the retainer ring off didn't you.
