I have been very lucky I think as I have never replaced a seal that was not in some thing that I could pound out from the back. So I just bought a used 3 blade grooming mower a John deer model 272 . I thought it was a good machine but a little noisy. I thought but I never herd one run and figured it was the high lift blades adding to the noise. It had been greased and maintained so I thought. Well when checking the gear box oil to my surprise it hade a dip stick which looked Like it hade been some what melted at some time and no oil on the stick. So I added a 1 and 1/2 qts of 80/90. I start it up and it ran a little quieter but not much and now oil runs out of the front of the box by the pto shaft. I do not know yet if the bottom seal is toast yet as I need to remove the shields to see the bottom of the box. So after I remove the pto shaft from the box . What is the proper way to replace that seal with out making more work or troubles for my self. I am hoping it is just a seal and not a bad gear box do to lack of oil for who knows how long. Thanks for the lesson.
