Old engineer told me he restored line shaft babbit journels by sooting the shaft in the bearing area by running an oxy torch such that it made a lot of soot to cover the shaft all around. Then they assembled the journal and dammed the ends somehow and poured in babbit. The soot provided the running clearance. I never got to see or try it. Leo
