2-4-D will not kill thistle. The best product I have ever used on thistles is "Hired hand" from Dow chemical. It does not kill grass but will kill thistle in less than twenty four hours. In three days they are dead dry. I have used just about everything out there and none of them are even close to Hired Hand on thistles.
It is a restricted chemical. It is labeled for CRP and permanent pasture. I have used it the last few years and have been able to just about clear all of my ground of thistles. I had one patch of Canadian thistles that was about three hundred feet in diameter. They where on this one farm when I bought it twenty years ago. I had tried just about everything on this patch. I would get a kill but then they would regrow from the roots. I sprayed that patch twice three years ago, late spring and then late fall. The next year there where only about twenty plants in the whole patch. I sprayed them and have not had any back there since. I usually will not really push a product but this stuff works.
