It will spin freely in both directions, and does push in to what feels like an 'engage' position.
I can install the 1000rpm extension over top, I was just worried with that pin sticking out that the extension will not sit flush against the backing like the 540 does -- but maybe that's the point and why nothing was mentioned in the manual.
