The Boston Tea Party was all about protecting trade. The tax part of it was to raise revenue to pay for England's cost of maintaining the colonies, but the oppressive part of it was caused by not being allowed to import tea from anywhere other than England. Since there was no other source of tea there was no way to avoid the taxes. Had there been another source the tax on English tea would not have been that big a deal.
