Hello dave2, Most leaks are from the shaft side or lip area of the sealing surgace. There is a product called speedi sleeve. It is a thin metal ring that comes with a metal cup installer. The ring has a lip on one side and the cup drives it in. The seal is very thin, and the regular seal, will have a new surface to seal. I have used this product many times. On a rear main or any other shaft, they work great. Getting to the shaft, in your case, would mean splitting the thing again! Here is the link for the product, it should launches for you.
