A few years ago, a neighbor of mine did that exact same thing when he caught 3 people stealing a battery out of one of his tractors.
When he got out of jail, he told me he wishes he'd have let 'em have the battery.
As much as we would like to just "fire away" in situations like that, stealing corn was NOT a threat to his life, therefor not quite enough reason in the eyes of the law to point a shotgun at someone in a truck and pull the trigger.
There are more intelligent ways to handle a thief than to put yourself in the position where you can be arrested.
