Actually the balistics of a .44 mag in a rifle is pretty good out to 200 yards with most bullets and accepatble as far as hitting power out 300. The biggest problem is the path which can vary as much as 10 inches or so in 200 yards. A BIL who shoots a 300 Win mag gut shot one at about 50 yards a couple of years ago. Took him near 12 hours to find it. He made 2 mistakes, 1. shot placement and 2. getting out of his stand and chasing it right away. He found a spot 15 min into the tracking where the deer had laid down and maybe would have died there had he not spooked it. As far as the shot placement if he would get a decent sized gun that didn't make him flinch.....Good friend who shoots well has taken many deer with a .44 Marlen lever action.
AS far as rifle hunting, get with on of the board members from Mn in the rifle zone. Drive/fly out and have your hunt.
