Had an opportunity to "do the math" on this type of situation, from the company viewpoint, several years ago. If there was enough work to need some or all to work Saturday at time and a half, it was generally cheaper to do that than put on more people (a few hours of 1.5 is cheaper than the fixed costs and fringe benes for a new guy). But if it got into a lot of mandatory double time on Sundays, 3 things came into play: it means you have considerable extra work, and could justify another guy(s); double time is more expensive than costs and benes for an additonal guy; and you get into serious morale problems if guys don't get a day off.
What kind of work is it? Is the size of the facility a limiting factor (ie, you can't hire more guys, because the facility is already at capacity)? Wonder if they might consider adding a swing shift- that doubles the size of the facility.
As far as labor laws, its a phone call away at the state labor dept., whatever its name is in your state. But if you raise a stink, expect to be history. You're an "at will" employee, and they don't need a reason to fire you.
