Back when I was a kid, and up until just a few years ago, school never started around here(North Central Nebraska) until after Labor Day. Now, though, they've moved it up...school started this year on the 16th of August....heck...with the wet spring/early summer we had here, we'd just got started really rolling on the haying...My son's 17 now and is proving to be a VERY good hand in the hayfield....too bad we had to lose him to school but that's the way it goes. According to the radio, the "starting school late so kids could work" doesnt exist anymore since...well...I forget why...uh-huh...ok....

ONE reason is why all this happens- sports...highschool sports has become big business around here and they want those kids to get all they can get...our football team started practice the 2nd of August...Now, I have nothing against highschool sports...I think it's good for the kids...but when it becomes the main thing that schools are interested it, BEYOND education, then it's gone way too far. I have a daughter who's a freshman..14 years old...who plays volleyball. She's gone now at least two nights a week...up to 150 miles away from the school, with another 40 miles to come home when she gets back with the team....is this helping her eduaction??? I kinda doubt it.....

Today's Featured Article - Show Coverage: Godfrey, Illinois Country Days - by Cindy Ladage. Except for last fourth of July's Old Gold show in Springfield, Illinois, I don't remember when it was so hot. Nevertheless, the heat didn't keep vendors and visitors alike from enjoying the third annual Country Day's Event. Jane Elliott said the event was originally a one man show. "Barry Seiler, owner of Country Town Farm Supply store used to invite people up to the Johne Deere store. He would give hats and a free meal for everyone that brings a tractor." Elliott said while this ... [Read Article]
