The pinion is wider than the ring gear (Hypoid or spiral bevel). If the pinion got into the differential carrier, there are bound to be other serious damage. Every tooth (ring and pinion)must be inspected for issues, every bearing for brenelling damage from floating metal flakes. I can imagine replacing every bearing and both ring and pinion, and maybe the yoke if it ran loose for any time at all.
