Been a long time but I'm thinking that they used a GM dizzy. Some of the GM systems of long ago use a 2 feed system to provide juice to the coil. While cranking the coil got 12 volts to aid in starting and after the key was released from the start position it switched over to (I wanna say 8 ) lower voltage through a ballist resistor. I'm pretty sure that it was off of the ignition switch but don't really remember. Someone posted a link to a Jeep forum the other day, you may want to go over there and ask.
