I changed my Case L to 12 volts. Took the generator to repair shop and he installed 12 volt fields form Ace parts and used the original 6 volt regulator with only a minor adjustment. If it is an Auto Lite generator, the field part number is 145 from Ace. Installation looks the same as original except for the 12 volt battery. Used the original 1 wire from the generator.
Have you checked the cable ends for internal corrosion at the connectors? Could be high resistance here.
