Chevy went 12 volt in 55 Ford in 56.I was there.Chev and GMC trucks changed in mid year.I know a 6v generator can run wild in a 12 volt system.I put my induction ammeter on the 55 chevy.It was putting out 60 amps at 1000 rpm.The car had exploded 2 12 volt batteries.55 chevy had an idiot light.If it had an ammeter the problem would have been spotted right away.12 volts fed into the field of a 6 volt generator will make it run away .Put 12 volts on an alternator field and disconnect the battery from the out put you can get 100 to 110 volts Dc enough to run a skill saw or drill.BTDT.Lose the battery connection on a 3 brush generator, the headlites burn out.Turn on headlite too soon after starting a car with a 3 brush generator in real cold weather,head lites burn out.Why, a cold battery does not load the generator right away.If you pay attention when putting a battery charger on a cold battery you will see the current slowly increase.
