You neighbour is into treating the symptoms rather than repairing the cause. Install a hydraulic pump de-stroker, a whole screaming $15.00. It's winter so use a winter block heater. I have no idea why some people refuse to plug the tractor in. So it will start like summer. Without grinding the batteries and starter down. And hammering the engine with ether. Measure the actual voltage at the starter when cranking. Not that you or anybody else will. I've asked this question dozens of times over the past 10yrs. Nobody has bothered to test yet. Odds are there are failing cables and high resistance connections. Bright and shinny doesn't always mean good contact either. Battery cables from Walmart are only good for boats and lawn tractors. There is a Delco 44MT starter that will wail that engine over with rpms you have never seen before. Two of the highest CCA 6V batteries in series is my personal favorite. Bolt the "ground" onto a starter mounting bolt.
