You can talk shot placement all you want but when the ranges are out there the smaller bullets just loose too much energy. I know a guy who shot at a deer with a 243 at about 450 yards. We know he hit it but not hard enough to even leave a blood trail. He was shooting Federal 80 grains. At the muzzle they have about 1925 Ft LBS of energy and they zip along at 3350 FPS, at 400 yards it's down to 675 Ft LBS and 2147 FPS. The problem is the weight of the round is dropping 2/3rds of it's energy and a lot of zip. By comparison a 30.06 shooting Federal 150 grain at the muzzle makes 2910 FPS and 2820 Ft LBS of energy and at 400 yards is about 2110 FPS and 1485 Ft LBS. At closer ranges there is nothing wrong with a 243 and with most of the guys I know they will not shoot over 200 yards anyway so it's not an issue. Heck I know a guy who is convinced that a 30.06 is only good out to 150 yards! On the other hand my BIL wasted about half a deer with his 300 Win Mag just the other day.
