You set your font size in the Firefox preferences. Go to Edit->Preferences->Content and change your default font size. I use 14 points.
In the same dialog, click Languages->Choose... and make sure "English/United States [en-us]" is first, followed by "English [en]". Otherwise I think it will use British spelling for spell check.
To turn on spell check, click the "Advanced" tab in the Preferences dialog and make sure "Check my spelling while I type" is checked. Close your preferences and you should be all set.
