Should be fine. I have a gas starter for my wood fireplace. It's a foot-long cast tube with about ten perforations that blast flames at the bottom front log. Its supply pipe goes through the masonry side wall of the fireplace and into the enclosed void outside the fireplace, where it connects to a valve. A lo-o-ng T handle comes out of the valve at 90 degrees and emerges through the brick facing that surrounds the fireplace. In other words, the on/off handle is a total of about three feet from the gas implement itself. (Don't know if this is even close to what you were inquiring about.)
