You didnt say what current draw the 12 volt pump creates????? but some typical supply devices (12 VDC outlets, sockets, etc) are rated for maybe 300 watts which would be 25 amps.
To answer the question we need to know the maximum curent draw and the max rating of the socket/outlet and go from there, but not knowing I'll take a guess and Id supply it with 10 gauge wire and use a 30 amp fuze or circuit breaker at the source. NOTE That could (depends on its rating) exceed the outlet socket/device rating and if so (say its rated 300 watts) then you would have to downsize the fuze or breaker to 25 amps. I would NOT use less then 12 gauge wire regardless and if you use 12 gauge wire then you would use a 20 amp fuze or circuit breaker.
If theres an ammeter Id use its LOAD (NOT battery) terminal as the voltage source, but if no ammeter you could use the hot ungrounded battery post as you asked with the fuze or circuit breaker there.
