There is nothing necessarily evil about requesting a return receipt. Did you put your email address in the posting rather than make the buyer answer through Craigslist? I wouldn't expect a return receipt request to make it through the craigslist mail relay.
A lot of buyers will use a craigslist aggregator like Search Tempest, so it's not too surprising to get a query from an out-of-state buyer. If the buyer seems fishy, just tell him you only want to deal with a local buyer. I suspect the query is legit, but you'll need to make a phone call to know for sure.
Last spring I sold my Yamaha motorcycle on Craigslist. After two or three weeks of queries from local idiots, I had almost given up on selling it. Then I got a query from a guy in Toronto whom I assumed was a scam artist. He turned out to be totally legit and ended up buying the bike at a fair price. Don't instantly discount out-of-town buyers, many are guys just like you. (Of course some are thieves and murderers, too, so be careful.)
