I built a wooden martin house back in the mid 1960's and I had martins the first year and every year after that. I had them in 1972 and we had a freak rain storm that summer when it dumped 7 or 8 inches of rain. It hit PA hard too. One evening when came home from work and my wife said there's something wrong in the martin house. She said there's a terrible odor and when I took down the house all the baby birds had drowned. Never had martins after that we even bought a fiberglass and an aluminium house. They would fly over , but never stayed and built any nests. I scrapped the wooden house. I have a picture of it somewhere here on the computer. Good luck on your martins you will really like them around. When I had them and mowed grass they would just look down from the martin house. Hal
