I should have mentioned, my father was a life long pipe smoker. He came down with throat cancer at age 71. They cured the cancer, but had to remove his voice box in the process.
The only way he could talk for the last 14 years of his life was to hold an electronic gizmo next to his throat. And, obviously, that was a mechanical sound.
