Fir is known for good rot resistance. Not as good as Longleaf yellow pine, but good enough. Considering that it's stronger for its weight than yellow pine, it's hardly surprising that it is in great demand for boatbuilding and aircraft construction. But if you don't want it, no problem. Most of the remaining old-growth Douglas fir is going straight to Japan as unmilled logs. The Japanese consider it far too valuable to let it get anywhere near an American lumber mill.
Note that much of the lumber sold as "Douglas fir" is actually larch. Both are very good woods.
I have only one complaint about Douglas fir, and that is it is very hard and it's almost impossible to drive a nail through it straight. Even when I use screws I find I have to drill pilot holes to get them to drive straight.
