Not near as neat as the north / south mount, bevel gear setup, but many years ago the local 2 cyl JD hero ran a cross mounted 406 or 427 Ford in an A puller tractor. He used a belt drive to the original JD crankshaft and had a hydraulic weight transfer device under the tractor that he could move rear to front as front end lift dictated. He also enjoyed joining 2 or 3 twin cyl JD's together to make large articulated 4 or 6 wd tractors. One twin, maybe a tripple, had an extra JD two cyl engine mounted on the rear tractor.
His latest and greatest effort was two 830's joined to make an articulated 4 wd with a modern sound guard cab on the unit. It was painted up nice and looked good. He may still farm with his multi 2 cyl toys that he enjoys so much. Don Duffner from ND if any of you follow it.
