I have heard that the 454 has a "natural" tendency to burn off about a quart of oil every 3000 miles even if nothing is wrong. Same as the later 8.1L (496).
Mobil 1 full synthetic 10W30 is supposed to cure that.
When I bought my 8.1L truck, it was burning through about a quart every 1500 miles. Changed to Mobil 1 full synthetic and it hasn't burned a drop.
