If you're just carrying a ladder and a couple hundred pounds of tools, you don't need a 3/4 ton or even a big engine. Test drive a base 3.7 litre F150 V6. It has way more power and way better fuel economy that any other V6. The Ecoboost is if you need lots of pulling power but the 3.7 still has over 300 HP and gets better than 21 MPG and is rated to get 23. The 6 speed transmission is very responsive.
