Replacement starter switch is a common thing on these. Most(including me) have gone to a heavy duty toggle switch instead of the keyed unit. Replacement is no big deal and you should be up and running in 10~15 minutes. So far as going electronic there"s a wide opinion base. If you are still 6V with the "49 front mount most will suggest that you stick with points. You should be over on the N board with these questions. Lots of info in the archives. Best of luck.
