I think you're right, they do build off a lot of existing platforms, it seems the products are good.
Will seems to struggle with conceptual design, engineering as we saw with that rotary/gatlin shotgun they tried. New designs from scratch are certainly formidable tasks, very costly and very risky, in addition to even being able to be built, then tested and proven.
